Peter Jackson released this statement today announcing that The Hobbit will become three films. The newly added third film is due in 2014.
It is only at the end
of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look
at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when
we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie – and a
large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story
was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and
the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a
simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And
the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an
unreserved ‘yes.’
We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf,
the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of
Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The
richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related
material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell
the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played
in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of
Middle-earth.
So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner
Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast
and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will
become three.
It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, ”a tale that grew in the telling.”
Cheers,
Peter J.

The Hobbit Trilogy?
At Comic-Con a rumor was swirling that Warner Brothers was going to turn Peter Jackson's two film adaption of The Hobbit
into three films. Peter Jackson shot down the idea and said it was
more likely that they would include additional footage on the extended
editions of the films on home video. Now it seems though they may
really be considering a third film. Apparently Jackson has shot enough
film for almost three movies. Almost means that some additional
shooting would be required next spring in order to fill in what footage
is needed to turn the two films into three. It's likely this will
happen because Warner Brothers won't turn down the opportunity to make
even more money now would they?!

Meet The Dwarves Of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Warner Brothers has released two new official pictures from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey have been released introducing us to the dwarves of the story. The film hits theaters December 14, 2012.
The first photo features Jed Brophy as Nori, Adam Brown as Ori and Mark Hadlow as Dori. Warner Brothers also released the following description: These three brothers, all sons of the same mother, could not be more different from each other. Dori, the oldest, spends much of his time watching out for Ori, the youngest; making sure he’s not caught a chill or got himself killed by Wargs or Goblins. No-body quite knows what Nori gets up to most of the time, except that it’s guaranteed to be dodgy and quite probably, illegal. Dori, Nori and Ori are intensely loyal to each other – and whilst they are perfectly happy fighting amongst themselves, woe-betide any anyone who means harm to one of these brothers.
The second photo features John Callen as Oin and Peter Hambleton as Gloin. The description of these two is as follows: Distant cousins of Thorin Oakenshield, these two doughty Northern Dwarves join the Company out of a sense of loyalty to their kin, and also because they have a substantial sum of money invested in the venture. Along with Bombur, Gloin is the only other married Dwarf in the Company (there being a shortage of female dwarves in general). His wife is an acclaimed beauty with a particularly fine beard. Gloin is the proud father of a young son, Gimli, who will go on to become part of the famous Fellowship of the Ring.
