The Hobbit Is Now Three FIlms

Peter Jackson released this statement today announcing that The Hobbit will become three films.   The newly added third film is due in 2014.

It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie – and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.’

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, ”a tale that grew in the telling.”

Cheers,

Peter J.

The Hobbit Trilogy?

At Comic-Con a rumor was swirling that Warner Brothers was going to turn Peter Jackson's two film adaption of The Hobbit into three films.  Peter Jackson shot down the idea and said it was more likely that they would include additional footage on the extended editions of the films on home video.  Now it seems though they may really be considering a third film.  Apparently Jackson has shot enough film for almost three movies.  Almost means that some additional shooting would be required next spring in order to fill in what footage is needed to turn the two films into three.  It's likely this will happen because Warner Brothers won't turn down the opportunity to make even more money now would they?!

Man Of Steel Teaser Trailer

Yahoo has brought us the debut of the teaser trailer for Man Of Steel.  Kevin Costner, who plays Jonathan Kent, narrates the trailer.  In some versions of the trailer Russel Crowe, who plays Jo-El, Superman's Kryptonian Father does the narration.  The words each speak are this:

Jonathan Kent: You're not just anyone. One day, you're going to have to make a choice. You have to decide what kind of man you want to grow up to be. Whoever that man is, good character or bad, is going to change the world.

Jor-El: You will give the people an ideal to strive towards.  They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.

Man Of Steel flies into theaters June 14, 2013.

Thomas Jane Returns As The Punisher (For A Short Film At Least)

Let's face it, none of The Punisher films have been that good, but Thomas Jane was easily the best actor in the role.  Now he has returned to the role in a short "fan" film that he put together and showed at Comic-Con along with Ron Perlman titled "Dirty Laundry".

"I wanted to make a fan film for a character I've always loved and believed in - a love letter to Frank Castle & his fans. It was an incredible experience with everyone on the project throwing in their time just for the fun of it. It's been a blast to be a part of from start to finish -- we hope the friends of Frank enjoy watching it as much as we did making it." -- Thomas Jane

Enjoy the film below and let's hope that when Marvel does make another Punisher film that they bring him back for the role.

The film is fairly violent so beware to our younger readers.

Del Toro Inspired To Make Hellboy 3

A story broke last week in which a six-year old who is battling leukemia made a request for his Make-A-Wish that Hellboy come and visit him. The boy was a huge fan of the films and Perlman donned the costume once again and made a very sick child quite happy. That boys wish came true, but it also had another effect. Guillermo del Toro, director of the first two Hellboy films, says the event was also a factor in helping to bring himself and Perlman together on making a third Hellboy. “I’ve encountered a lot of kids who are fans of the movies,” said del Toro, “but to hear the story of this kid who was watching the movies while going through treatment, it really just moved me a lot.” The director wants everyone to know that he hasn’t yet approached Hellboy creator Mike Mignola on the idea of a Hellboy III, and no studio is signed on yet. However, he says, “We’re going to make an effort to do it. I hope it happens.”

New Walking Dead Game On The Way

Even though TellTale Games will continue to publish episodes of The Walking Dead centered around Lee Everett, Activision will publish a first-person action video game focusing around famous brothers Merle and Daryl Dixon. The game will explore what happened before meeting up with the survivors in Atlanta. Being developed by Terminal Reality, the game is being described as a “haunting, unforgiving quest to make their way to the supposed safety of Atlanta.” Players will have the much-awaited opportunity to control Daryl Dixon as they avoid detection from walkers that use scent, sound and sight to spot you while successfully trying to make your way to Atlanta. The players will have a lot of control as they can decide whether or not to fight the zombies and waste possible ammunition, or just simply sneak by them. In the game, players will have to carefully manage food and ammunition during the trip to Atlanta. This sounds a lot like zombie-epic video game Dead Island. Much like TellTale Games' The Walking Dead, you will encounter "a slew of characters". Should you trust these characters? Should you take them with you for the ride? That is completely up to you. Click this link to check out the official site. The Walking Dead will release in 2013 for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.

New Details For The Walking Dead Season 3

The highly anticipated 3rd season of The Walking Dead hits television screens this October and Entertainment Weekly has new details on the show!  The entire landscape has fallen to zombies,” says Mazzara of the start of season 3. “The entire world has collapsed, the apocalypse has taken over, the zombies have taken over, there’s no safe place. And I think in the past our characters thought they could find some safe harbor, and now there’s just no good hiding place at all.”
Wow. That sounds like a major bummer. Will a certain prison turn into their salvation? And what can we expect of the katana-sword wielding Michonne? “Just like in the comic books, she is a badass and she hates the walkers more than anything else,” Mazzara says. “She treats them with contempt. What’s interesting about the version of this character is she has a lot of trouble fitting into human society. She’s probably better off staying out there alone with the walkers. She’ll be very interesting and a complicated character to bring into the fold, if we even do that. She gives us a lot to play with.”
As for The Governor, the suave David Morrissey may seem like an odd choice to play the rough and tumble villain, but Mazzara is confident the British actor can deliver the goods. “David is an incredibly talented actor with a lot of magnetism,” says Mazzara, “and we need somebody who can serve as the foundation, the pillar, for an entire storyline, an entire world of Woodbury. David has the strength to do that. I also think that David’s approach to the character was spot on. He understands that this is an interesting, complex, multilayered, dark figure, and he’s very interested in playing that.”

Marvel NOW! Is Coming

Word has been trickling out about the Marvel universe but now it's official.  Entertainment Weekly has everything you need to know about Marvel's new relaunch coming this Fall in an article found right here.
The relaunch will branch out of the conclusion of X-Men Vs. The Avengers and here is what Marvel Editor-In-Chief Alex Alonso had to say, “It’s not hype when we say that AvX is the culmination of a lot of stories we’ve done over the last several years.  Characters are redeemed or not. Characters are changed. The X-Men and the Avengers are both repositioned for the future. What better time to shake things up? “
The relaunch will also be handled differently than DC's New 52 last year with a more gradual roll out..  “I feel that it’s a much more humane approach for retailers and fans to tell them: ‘Look. In the months of October through February, every week you can go into a comic book store and find a few new jumping-on points for the Marvel Universe, a place you’re going to like visiting. Or revisiting. This ain’t a reboot. It’s a new beginning.”  For more on the event read the full article at here!

The Complete Indiana Jones Blu-Ray Press Release

We all knew that all four Indiana Jones films were coming to Blu-Ray, now an official press release has been issued for the set along with cover art!  Indiana Jones comes to high definition this September!  Here is that official press release:  In June of 1981 director Steven Spielberg and executive producer George Lucas introduced the world to Indiana Jones when the unforgettable Raiders of the Lost Ark debuted in theaters. Exploding to instant acclaim, the film has now been carefully restored, alongside remastered versions of the archaeologist’s other thrilling adventures—Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Prepare for excitement, adventure and snakes—why did it have to be snakes?—all with pristine picture and sound when INDIANA JONES: The Complete Adventures debuts on Blu-ray September 18, 2012 from Lucasfilm Ltd. and Paramount Home Media Distribution.

Supervised by director Steven Spielberg and renowned sound designer Ben Burtt, Raiders of the Lost Ark has been meticulously restored with careful attention to preserving the original look, sound and feel of the iconic film. The original negative was first scanned at 4K and then examined frame-by-frame so that any damage could be repaired.

The sound design was similarly preserved using Burtt’s original master mix, which had been archived and unused since 1981. New stereo surrounds were created using the original music tracks and original effects recorded in stereo but used previously only in mono. In addition, the sub bass was redone entirely up to modern specifications and care was taken to improve dialogue and correct small technical flaws to create the most complete and highest quality version of the sound possible while retaining the director’s vision. The result is an impeccable digital restoration that celebrates the film and its place in cinematic history.

The installments in the franchise have won a combined seven Academy Awards®. Relive every heart-pounding thrill like never before as all four films arrive together, for the first time presented in 1080p high definition with English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio accompanied by a collection of documentaries, interviews, featurettes and new bonus features.

Masters Of The Universe Return To Comics At DC

The Masters Of The Universe are returning to comics courtesy of DC Comics. Written by none other than Geoff Johns with artwork by Howard Porter and John Livesay, the lead-off chapter is a prelude from Eternia’s history that is tied directly to the upcoming print comic He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe. In his story, Johns introduces an entirely new character that he first imagined when he was just eight years old – Sir Laser Lot. Mattel even created a new action figure based on the character that will debut at San Diego Comic-Con.
“I’ve been a huge fan of
He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe since I was a kid, so it’s cool to write a story for this new series — not to mention teaming up with Howard Porter and John Livesay, my old Flash partners in crime,” stated Geoff Johns. “And to create an all-new character that will become an action figure – Sir Laser Lot — it’s beyond fun. I’m going to buy like 100 of them.”

The digital series will debut new chapters twice a month on Saturdays. The second chapter (7/14) is written by Mike Costa with artwork by Jheremy Raapack and it tells the story of He-Man’s most trusted companion, Battle Cat. The third digital chapter (7/28), written by Kyle Higgins with artwork by Pop Mhan, is an adventure with the captain of the Eternia guard, Man-At-Arms.
