Avatar Sequels Are Coming!

Director James Cameron recently revealed that he is currently working on the scripts for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, which will be released in December 2014 and December 2015 respectively. Here's what the director had to say about his Avatar sequels, which he will shoot back-to-back:

"I am in the process of writing the next two Avatar films now. We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. Christmas '14 and '15 is the current plan."

The news falls in line with a report from August which indicated Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 will be shot back-to-back. Without mentioning any names, James Cameron also said that any Avatar survivors will return for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3:

"Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form."

Clone Wars Retro Poster

Several theatrical screenings this week are being held to air the new Clone Wars episode titled "Savage Opress", featuring revelations to the origins of Darth Maul. The episode will air in a few weeks, but at the event this cool retro poster was given away.  Unfortunately there was not a screening in Houston!

Irvin Kershner Passes Away At 87

Director Irvin Kershner passed away over the weekend at the age of 87. His goddaughter, actress Adriana Santini, confirmed the news early Monday morning, but no further details were given at this time.

Kershner is best known for his work directing Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, the second and most well received of the six movie franchise. He also helmed the James Bond adventure Never Say Never Again starring Sean Connery, and the often maligned sequel Robocop 2.

There is a prequel to The Thing coming out in April 2011 and it has the same name as the original, The Thing. It stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and a bunch of other people no one has heard of.  IMDB has the plot as this, at an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson. While Dr. Halvorson keeps to his research, Kate partners with Sam Carter, a helicopter pilot, to pursue the alien life form.The first official still images have been released and here are a few.

Look! It's New Sci-Fi Flicks In Theaters!

New original sci-fi in theaters is rare these days it seems.  Here's a couple of movies that look promising.  Not that alien invasion is totally original but Skyline looks very cool.  Skyline comes from The Brothers Strause.  The other trailer is for I Am Number Four which looks pretty neat also and is produced by Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay.

The Force Is Returning To Theaters In 3-D!

Lucasfilm Ltd. announced today that the live-action Star Wars Saga will be converted to 3D! There are few movies that lend themselves more perfectly to 3D; from the Death Star trench run to the Tatooine Podrace, the Star Wars Saga has always delivered an entertainment experience that is completely immersive. Presented by Twentieth Century Fox and Lucasfilm Ltd., the cutting edge conversion will take that immersion to the next thrilling level, with Industrial Light & Magic supervising the project. Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace is expected to be released theatrically in 2012. A release date has not yet been determined. "Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right," said John Knoll, Visual Effects Supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic. "It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results. For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars  The films are expected to be released yearly with Episode I in 2012, Attack Of The Clones in 2013, Revenge Of The Sith in 2014, A New Hope in 2015, The Empire Strikes Back in 2016, and Return Of The Jedi in 2017.
